Alaffia Liquid Soap Review: Great Ingredients, Tricky Experience

Written By: Andrew Siemon

If you care about natural, fair-trade body care, Alaffia is probably already on your radar. They’re known for simple ingredient lists, ethical sourcing, and products that generally feel good to use and good to buy. You can grab it here on Amazon.

This review takes a close look at one of their liquid soaps—how it arrived, how it feels, and whether it’s worth choosing over their bar soap.

Overview / First Impressions

I’m a big fan of Alaffia overall. I try to buy their soap, shampoo, and moisturizers whenever I can, so I came into this with pretty high expectations.

With this particular liquid soap, my experience was mixed:

  • The formula is very thin and watery.
  • It doesn’t lather much on its own.
  • The bottle I received arrived broken and leaking.

There’s a lot to like about Alaffia as a brand, but this specific product just didn’t land for me the way their bar soaps do.

Build Quality & Packaging

The most immediate issue was how it arrived:

  • The bottle was broken when I opened the package.
  • There was soap all over the inside of the shipping bag.
  • It had been placed inside a separate leak-proof bag, which strongly suggests it was packed already damaged rather than breaking in transit.

That last detail is what’s frustrating. Someone took the time to contain the leak, but the product still shipped in that condition. It’s hard to say whether this was on the retailer, the warehouse, or somewhere else in the chain—but it doesn’t leave a great first impression.

Once you get past the packaging problem, the bottle itself is standard liquid-soap packaging: functional, but not particularly rugged.

Features & Formula

From an ingredient and philosophy standpoint, Alaffia is doing what they usually do:

  • Very simple, natural-style formula
  • No thickeners or heavy lathering agents
  • Liquid consistency closer to water than gel

This is good if you’re trying to avoid synthetic additives. The downside is that it behaves very differently from typical store-bought body washes.

The soap is:

  • Extremely runny – it pours out quickly.
  • Low-lather – don’t expect big, foamy bubbles.

That’s not necessarily a flaw from a formulation standpoint—it’s more about expectations and how you plan to use it.

How It Feels & How to Use It

Because the soap is so thin and doesn’t foam up much on its own, how you apply it makes a big difference.

Best Way to Use It

To get the most out of this liquid soap:

  • Use it with a cloth, sponge, or loofah. A loofah is ideal—it helps build what little lather there is and keeps the product from just running off your hands and down the drain.
  • Avoid applying it directly to your hands and then to your body. You’ll end up wasting a lot because of the watery texture.

Once you’ve got it on a cloth or loofah, it does its job: it cleans, and it feels like a gentle, natural wash rather than a heavy detergent.

Limitations / Things to Know

Here are the main drawbacks I ran into:

  • Very watery texture
If you’re used to thick body washes or shower gels, this will feel almost too thin.
  • Low lather
Because there are no added thickeners or strong foaming agents, it won’t give you that rich, bubbly lather many people expect.
  • Packaging experience
Receiving a broken, leaking bottle that was still shipped out anyway is a real downside and raises questions about quality control in the packing and shipping process.
  • Personal preference vs. bar soap
For my own use, I strongly prefer Alaffia’s bar soap. It’s:
    • Easier to handle
    • Less wasteful
    • More satisfying in terms of feel and use

Final Thoughts

As much as I like Alaffia as a brand, this particular liquid soap isn’t for me.

Pros:

  • Clean, minimal formula
  • Ethically minded brand
  • Gentle, non-harsh feel on skin

Cons:

  • Extremely thin, watery consistency
  • Doesn’t lather well without a cloth or loofah
  • Poor packaging experience (arrived broken and leaking)

If you:

  • Prefer natural ingredients
  • Don’t care much about big foam
  • Always use a loofah or washcloth

…then you might still get along with this product.

But if you:

  • Like thick, gel-style body washes
  • Want a more traditional lathering experience
  • Care a lot about packaging durability and presentation

…I’d recommend going with Alaffia’s bar soap instead of the liquid.

On balance, I’d rate this liquid soap 6 out of 10—decent in concept, but not something I’d repurchase when the bar version is available.
