How to Beat Krauser in Resident Evil 4 (Krauser Section Guide)

Written By: Andrew Siemon

Krauser is one of the most intense and punishing boss encounters in Resident Evil 4. Between his speed, knife attacks, and quick-time events (QTEs), this fight can feel overwhelming if you don’t have a clear plan.

This guide walks you step-by-step through the Krauser section: how to stay alive, what weapons to use, and how to position yourself so you can beat him consistently.

Overview: The Three Main Phases of the Krauser Fight

You can think of the Krauser section as three main parts:

  • Opening Phase – Run away, open the time door, and survive while it unlocks.
  • Mid Section – Progress through the area, stun Krauser with the shotgun, and open the gates.
  • Final Showdown – Use the magnum and knife combo, stay away from him, and spam QTEs to finish the fight.

Each phase rewards speed, awareness, and good resource management.

Phase 1: Run, Open the Time Door, Stay Alive

1. Run Away Immediately

As soon as the encounter starts:

  • Run away from Krauser as quickly as possible. Don’t try to fight him here.
  • Your priority is getting to the time door and triggering it to open.

2. Trigger the Time Door

  • Interact with the time door so it starts opening.
  • While you’re waiting, position yourself near the ladder.

3. Use the Ladder to Stall

  • While the door is opening, jump up and down on the ladder to keep some distance and avoid getting cornered.
  • If Krauser closes in and you end up in a knife struggle or close-quarters QTE:
    • Spam the QTE buttons (L1, R1, Square, X on PlayStation).
    • This usually works reliably if you react fast.

4. Keep Your Health Full

  • Krauser’s knife attacks can kill you instantly or nearly so if your health is low.
  • Try to keep your health topped up during this whole section.
  • Once the door opens, go through and move on quickly.

Phase 2: Progressing the Area & Using the Shotgun

1. Take the Right Path

After the time door:

  • Take a right, not a left.
  • This route gives you better access to items and keeps you moving forward efficiently.

2. Grab Herbs and Healing Items

  • Krauser can take a lot out of you in this section.
  • Aim to have 6–7 healing items (green herbs, mixed herbs, etc.) if possible.
  • Explore quickly and grab what you can, but don’t linger too long or you risk getting ambushed.

3. Dealing with Krauser Here

He doesn’t always attack you immediately at the start of this mid section, so use that time to reposition and loot.

  • When he does appear:
    • Use the shotgun to stun him when he gets too close.
    • You can use the TMP, but it’s often better to save it for later unless you’re comfortable with your ammo situation.

4. Regular Enemies

You’ll encounter standard enemies as you move through:

  • They’re straightforward – just shoot them as usual.
  • Expect:
    • One enemy around a corner.
    • Two more down an alley.
  • Clear them quickly so you can focus on Krauser.

Phase 3: Final Krauser Fight (Magnum & Knife Strategy)

This is the most dangerous part of the encounter and where most players struggle.

1. Prep Before the Final Platform

  • Stock up on health – use any herbs you have to keep your HP high.
  • Make sure you’ve got:
    • Magnum ammo (as much as possible).
    • A shotgun and/or TMP as backup.
  • Grenades:
    • They don’t do much to Krauser here.
    • You can mostly ignore them for this fight.

2. Core Strategy: Back Up, Dodge, Counter

  • Constantly back up. This is crucial.
    • Slowly retreat while keeping Krauser in front of you.
    • Don’t let him get behind or beside you.
  • When he attacks:
    • Watch for QTE prompts and spam the buttons (L1, R1, Square, X).
    • If he gets you on the ground, keep spamming QTEs to escape.

3. Weapon Choice: Magnum + Knife

This is where the magnum and knife really shine.

  • Magnum
    • Use it to deal big chunks of damage when you have a clear shot.
    • Be careful: reloading takes a long time and leaves you vulnerable.
    • Don’t reload if he’s too close; it’s often safer to switch weapons or wait.
  • Knife
    • After a successful dodge/QTE or when you create space:
      • Rush in and hit him with the knife a few times if it’s safe.
    • This saves ammo and does solid damage over time.
  • Shotgun / TMP
    • Shotgun is okay for stunning him, but it can feel weak in this phase.
    • TMP can help when you don’t have time to reload the magnum.
    • Use them as support weapons, not your main damage dealers.

4. Positioning Tips

  • Always be moving backward, never standing still in front of him.
  • If he winds up for a big attack:
    • Be ready for the QTE.
    • If you dodge successfully, counter with the knife or a quick magnum shot.
  • Don’t get greedy:
    • A few solid hits are better than overcommitting and getting killed.

Extra Tips & Common Mistakes

  • Don’t ignore your health bar. One or two hits can end you if you’re not topped up.
  • Reload timing matters.
    • Try to reload only when he’s recovering or at a distance.
    • If you’re nervous about reload time, switch to TMP or shotgun temporarily.
  • Expect to die a few times.
    • This fight has a learning curve; pattern recognition and QTE timing are key.
  • If you feel overwhelmed:
    • Focus on staying alive first, damaging him second.
    • Once you get comfortable dodging and backing up, the damage phase becomes much easier.

Final Thoughts

Krauser is designed to test your reaction time, resource management, and close-quarters combat skills. Once you break the fight into clear phases and stick to a simple plan—run and survive, stun with the shotgun, then finish with magnum and knife while backing up and spamming QTEs—the encounter becomes far more manageable.

It may take a few attempts to really “get” the rhythm of the fight, but there is a reliable way to bring him down. Stay calm, keep your health high, and don’t be afraid to retreat and reset your positioning.

You’ll have him beat before long.
